George
Arliss was staying at The Palace Hotel when somebody (some say Arliss himself)
suggested naming a salad or salad dressing after his appearance as the
Rajah of Rukh in The Green Goddess. So the Palace Hotel chef created
the Green Goddess Salad in honor of Arliss' appearance in the play.
Arliss
was nominated for Best Actor in 1929/30 for his appearance in the
film version of The Green Goddess, but lost to himself in the title
role
of the sound version of his most popular stage role, Disraeli (such
dual
nominations are not permitted under current rules). Arliss
liked that role so much that he played it for years on stage and made
a
silent film of it in 1921 in addition to his Oscar winning version.
Oh,
okay! Full credit if you said Paul Newman. |
