This was a surprisingly
mediocre revival of Peter Shaffer's excellent play at the huge John
Gielgud Theatre in the West End. The big casting coup was Harry
Potter's Daniel Radcliffe making his theatre debut in the demanding
role of Alan Strang, a boy who blinds six horses and is sent to
a compassionate but burnt out psychiatrist (blandly played by Richard
Griffiths). Radcliffe gave it a game try, but delivered a one-note
performance that lacked nuance or vocal technique required for such
a major production.
