Henry
Fonda won
a lifetime achievement Oscar in 1980
and the 1981 Best Actor for On Golden Pond.
Paul
Newman won a lifetime achievement Oscar in 1985
and the 1986 Best Actor for The Color of Money.
Charles
Chaplin also won a competitive award after winning
a special award, having won a lifetime achievement Oscar
in 1971 as well as the 1972 Original Dramatic Score Oscar for
Limelight (see Question 11). The Little
Tramp also
won a special Oscar at the very first Academy Awards in 1928
for "versatility and genius in writing, acting, directing and producing
The Circus." The Circus, made while Chaplin was in
the midst of
a bitter divorce, is ironically considered one of his weakest films.
