The National Theatre - The Man of Mode

A poll of architects named the National Theatre the ugliest building on the South Bank of the Thames, and it's easy to see why. It is a thoroughly unattractive mass of concrete that is an eyesore on an otherwise gorgeous walkway. The monstrosity is redeemed by being the home of some of the greatest theatre in the English language.

Jon only went to see The Man of Mode because he wanted to see something at the National, but artistic director Nicholas Hytner's magnificent modern dress production of George Etherege's Restoration Comedy was by far the best thing that he saw in London. The play featured magnificent performances by Tom Hardy and especially Rory Kinnear (above left) as the outrageous Sir Foppling Flutter and inspired dance numbers between the scenes that brilliantly covered the changes to the extraordinary set. All in all, this production of The Man of Mode was a masterpiece.
